Prof. AbdulRazzaq AbdulMajeed Alaro

Professor Alaro is a Professor of Law, Shari’ah Consultant and an internationally Pcertified arbitrator. He had his LL.B with First Class (Hons) in 1993, and LL.M and Ph.D. with distinctions, specializing in Islamic Law of Banking, Insurance and Capital Market, and has published in reputable journals across the world. In 2021, he delivered the 196th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, the first by a Professor of Islamic Law of Banking and Finance in West Africa. Professor Alaro is an advisor/consultant to the Central Bank of Nigeria, National Insurance Commission, Debt Management Office and Securities & Exchange Commission, among others. He has also been invited to speak in many high impact fora in different parts of the world. In 2023, He won the “Most Outstanding Alumnus in Intellectual Impact” award, of the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Professor Alaro is the current Head of Research and Translation Committee of the Union of African Scholars, with headquarters in Bamako, Mali. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of African Muslim Scholars. He speaks and writes fluently in both English and Arabic, and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (FNITI).

Basheer Oshodi Ph.D.

Basheer Oshodi Ph.D. has over 23 years work experience in banking, real estate and Bacademia. Basheer was Head, Non-Interest Finance and Head, Research at EFInA. He was Head, Islamic Banking Risk & Compliance at Stanbic IBTC Bank (a member of Standard Bank Group) and set up the non-interest banking window in 2009. He also initiated products compliant with non-interest finance principles for Stanbic IBTC Asset Management Ltd. He has worked as an investment analyst and business analyst in other capacities. He has attended Said Business School – University of Oxford, University of Pennsylvania, University of Columbia, University of Lagos, London Metropolitan University, University of Buckingham, and Da Vinci Institute – South Africa.

Prof. Luqman Zakariyah

Professor Luqman Zakariyah holds a L.L.B degree in Sharī‘ah (Islamic Law) from Islamic University Medina, Saudi PArabia; a Master degree in Islamic Studies from Lagos State University, Nigeria and a Ph.D. in Islamic Legal Studies from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David formerly known as University of Wales, Lampeter. United Kingdom. He has worked and researched in various academic institutions. He was a Teaching Fellow and lecturer of the Study of Islam and Muslims, University of Aberdeen and Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education Dundee United Kingdom respectively between 2009-2013. He was also ILSP Fellow of Harvard Law, USAbetween 2012-2013, a Visiting Scholar of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, (Oxford Hilary Term 2012) and an Honorary Visiting Lecturer, Department of Sharī‘ah and Economics, Academy of Islamic Studies University of Malay between June-July 2010. He taught at the department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh, IIUM from 2013-2019, where he served as head of the department for two terms, 2016-2017 and 2019-2020. He also served in various capacities in the University such as Head of Shari’ah Compliance, Office of Quality Assurance; Head of Research, Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, Internal Auditor of the University. Professor Luqman Zakariyah moved to Federal University of Kashere, Nigeria in 2020 where he was appointed Head of the Department of Religious Studies and Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence. He is currently Professor of Applied Islamic Jurisprudence and Legal Theory at the Department of Islamic Studies, University of Abuja, FCT, Nigeria.

In addition to his wide range of experiences in different higher educational institutions, he has taught many different courses related to Islamic law in particular and to Islam Studies in general. Among those courses are: Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh), Comparative Islamic Jurisprudence (al-Fiqh al-Muqaran), Underlying Principles of Islamic Banking and Finance, Islamic Economic System, Multiculturalism in Theory and Practice Globalisation and Political Islam and Applied Maqasid al-Shariah. Professor Zakariyah has published books, chapters in books and articles in reputable academic publishing companies and academic refereed journals among are; Legal Maxims in Islamic criminal law (Brill, 2015); “harmonising legality with morality in Islamic banking and finance” in Intellectual Discourse 2015; “Sharī‘ah Values for Modern Societies”, in James Arthur and Terence Lovat eds. He has also participated in local, national, and international conferences and seminars where he presented papers on various subjects related to Islamic law in general, Islamic finance law, and Islamic Criminal law. He is a regular reviewer for International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management and an occasional reviewer for Journal of Africa Law, SOAS. He was one of the founding members of Special Interest Group in Islamic Law, United Kingdom Centre for Legal Education (United KingdomCLE), Warwick University, United Kingdom and member of some International academic associations includes British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) 2005-2007; Law and Society Association, 2006–to date; International Society for Islamic Legal Studies, 2008–2011; Association of Legal and Social Philosophy 207- 2008; Islamic Studies Network, United Kingdom Higher Education, United Kingdom.2009–2013.

His research focuses generally on exploring how Islamic law can contribute to modern debate on various issues such as Islamic banking and finance both process and products and Islamic socio-economic reforms using the concept of overall objectives of Islam (Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah)

Prof. Luqman Lekan Adedeji

A distinguished educator and academic leader, he holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies Education and Acurrently serves as the Head of the Arts Education Department at the University of Lagos. With over 27 years of dedicated experience in higher education, he has been instrumental in shaping curriculum development, delivering engaging lectures, and supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. His commitment to quality education and student success is reflected in his comprehensive approach to academic guidance and evaluation.

In his role at the University of Lagos, he leads a dynamic team of lecturers and administrative staff, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes innovative teaching and learning. He actively engages with community organisations and educational institutions to create partnerships that enhance educational outcomes and broaden students’ practical experiences.

His leadership extends beyond academia; as the Chief Imam of the Peace Estate Muslim Community Mosque, he provides spiritual guidance and actively engages in community development initiatives. His previous positions, including Project Coordinator at Fountain University and National General Secretary at NASFAT Headquarters, demonstrate his capacity for effective organisational leadership and project management.

He holds several qualifications, including a Certificate in Islamic Economics from the International Islamic University, Malaysia, and an M.Ed. in Curriculum in Islamic Studies from the prestigious University of Lagos. Additionally, he has served as the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos where he contributed to academic administration and faculty support.

His involvement with the Nigeria Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies highlights his commitment to professional development within the field. He is dedicated to mentoring future educators and fostering a strong sense of community among educators in Islamic studies.

Sarwi is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in operations management, human resources, and business development, complemented by more than a decade in leadership roles. She possesses exceptional skills in operations planning, program management, and customer experience, and has a strong track record in cost reduction, innovation, and quality performance management.

Currently, she serves as the Head of Public Sector Sales at Airtel Networks Limited in Nigeria, where she develops targeted sales strategies for the public sector clients and manages high-performing sales teams to achieve customer satisfaction and revenue goals. Previously, she held key positions focused on customer service, collections, and customer experience management, where she drove significant improvements in service delivery and customer loyalty.

Her expertise in customer relations and experience management, programme leadership, project management, B2B sales, account management, and business process improvement. Her leadership style emphasises team building and change management, and she prides herself on her exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

She holds a Master of Science degree in Marketing from the University of Liverpool, a Post Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Financial) from Manchester Business School, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from the University of Abuja. Additionally, she has earned certifications including the Telecoms Mini MBA, Prosci Change Manager Certification, and Prince2 Project Management.

Mrs. Saidat Adeola Otiti

Saidat is the Founder/Creative Director/Chief Executive Officer of Baytuzzeenah Ltd – an SIslamic Culture and Awareness outfit which has been in operation since 2001 and has been in the forefront of promoting Islamic Lifestyle with retail outlets across the state.

Saidat has an MBA-Finance (1989) from the University of Lagos and has had considerable experience in Banking and Finance, having worked for over 11 years in banking before she left the bank at senior management level in 2000 to set up Baytuzzeenah Ltd. Her experience in Banking and Finance spans corporate finance, Small and Medium Enterprise banking, export and trade finance, branch banking and credit risk management [she was the Head of the Risk Management Department of former Chartered bank (now Stanbic IBTC bank) before she left the bank in 2000].

Her experience in Banking and Finance is enriched with the knowledge of Islamic Banking and Finance. She has an MSC (with Distinction) in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance (2001) from Loughborough University (United Kingdom).

She was one of the few resource persons in the enlightenment campaign (from 2002), on Islamic Banking & Finance (through lectures at various venues across southwest Nigeria and enlightenment through the media; print and television) in the wake of the introduction of the non-interest banking initiative in Nigeria.

Saidat is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and a Director at FIS Securities Ltd. She sits on the Board of a number of companies such asFIS Securities Ltd, Crescent Schools, Al-Furqan Estate Ltd, etc.

She has won many awards for excellence, including the best overall Postgraduate graduating Islamic Economics Banking and Finance prize for 2001 academic year – Loughborough University United Kingdom.

Imam Maruf Okusanya

Imam Okusanya is a dedicated and accomplished educator with extensive experience in Arabic and Islamic studies, complemented by a strong academic background. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Studies and a Master of Arts in Arabic Literature, he has cultivated a deep understanding of the Arabic language and its cultural contexts. His commitment to education is reflected in his roles at various educational institutions, including his current teaching position at Daru Da’wah Arabic School and his part-time lecturing at Ansarudeen College of Education between 2008 and 2017. Additionally, he has been lecturing at Ekiti State University, Isolo campus since 2020.

He possesses a solid foundation in computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office, which enhances his teaching methodologies and administrative capabilities. His proficiency in English and Arabic translation further enriches his contributions to educational environments, allowing him to bridge communication gaps for students.

His dedication to community service is evident in his role as Chief Imam at Tawakalitu Central Mosque (2006 till date) and his involvement with the National Council for Muslim Youths Organizations as State Murshid between 2012 and 2018. These positions reflect his leadership skills and commitment to fostering community development.

Additionally, he has pursued continuous professional development, evidenced by his recent postgraduate diploma in Shari’ah and participation in empowerment training at the University of Islamic Sciences in Jordan. This ongoing education underscores his desire to stay updated in his field and contribute meaningfully to both his students and the wider community.

With a passion for reading and travelling, he brings a well-rounded perspective to his educational approach, fostering a rich learning environment for his students. Dr. Umar A. Oseni

Dr. Umar A. Oseni is the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Arbitration Centre. Previously, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM), a multilateral financial organization. He was also the Executive Director (Legal and Compliance) and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the IILM.

Dr. Umar is the Mufti of Auchi Sacred Kingdom in Edo State and also a member of the Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts (FRACE) of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

At some point in his career, Dr. Umar was an Associate Professor of Law and Regulation of Islamic Finance at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and was also a visiting fellow at the Islamic Legal Studies Program of the Harvard Law School, Harvard University. Apart from being a Harvard-certified negotiator and dispute-resolution expert, Dr. Umar has consulted for numerous bodies in the areas of law and regulation of Islamic finance. With a good blend of both significant academic and industry wide experience in Islamic finance, law and dispute resolution, Dr. Umar has completed strategic consultancy works for some United Nations agencies such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), COMCEC of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group, and other government and government-linked agencies. Dr. Umar is a member of both the Nigerian Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. He is also a member of the Governance and Ethics Board of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI).

With over 100 publications in Islamic finance law, Islamic legal studies, arbitration, dispute resolution, and related areas, he has published widely in refereed journals and books on Islamic finance and law. Umar co-authored the first Textbook on Islamic Finance titled: Introduction to Islamic Banking and Finance: Principles and Practice (United Kingdom: Pearson Education Limited, 2013). He is also a co-author of IFSA2013: Commentaries on Islamic Banking and Finance, and Alternative Dispute Resolution in Islam (Kuala Lumpur: IIUM Press, 2013). He co-edited Islamic Finance and Development (Cambridge, Massachusetts: ILSP, Harvard Law School, 2014) and Emerging Issues in Islamic Finance Law and Practice in Malaysia, (United Kingdom: Emerald Publishing, 2019). He is also the lead editor of Fintech in Islamic Finance: Theory and Practice (United Kingdom: Taylor and Francis, Routledge, 2019), a pioneering, authoritative book on the dynamics of financial technology in Islamic finance. His latest co-authored book is titled, Islamic Contract Lawpublished by the Oxford University Press, United Kingdom (2024).

Dr. Umar received his LLB (Hons) in Common Law and Sharī‘ah from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria; Master of Comparative Laws (with Distinction) and Ph.D. from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He did his post-doctoral fellowship programme at Harvard Law School where he specialized in dispute management in Islamic finance. He also holds a Professional Master of Law degree in Financial Laws from the York University, Ontario, Canada.
